Senegal takes down Poland
Senegal raised the African flag high after beating Poland 2-1 in their FIFA World Cup opening Group H match in Russia.
Four other African representatives faltered and Senegal collected their first set of points in today’s match and raised the continent’s hopes of having a team in the knock-out stage of the football extravaganza.
Idrissa Gana Gueye’s shot was deflected for the opener before Mbaye Niang grabbed his first international goal by pouncing on a back pass by a Polish midfielder.
Poland pulled one back late on but the damage had already been done.
Group H also has Japan, who beat Colombia 2-1 in today’s early kick-off.
Another African team, Egypt are in action tonight against hosts, Russia in a group A encounter.
