Two male lions caused great excitement in the Kruger National Park on Friday when they brought down a kudu between a group of cars on the H1 road between Orpen Gate and Satara Camp.

“I thought these sort of things only happened in documentaries,” said Carrie Dunford, who managed to capture an extraordinary series of photos of the lions bringing down the kudu between the cars.

“I stopped alongside the road to watch the two male lions which had walked onto the road.

“They stopped every few metres to mark their territory,” Dunford, a British student who is in the country doing some wildlife research, said.

“It was then that one of them saw the kudu standing in the bushes near the road.

“The lion immediately crouched and started stalking the buck.”

The kudu spotted the lion and tried to escape across the tar road.

Its hooves slipped on the tar and it landed on the ground between a group of cars.

While the kudu was still trying to find its feet, one of the lions tackled it from behind, Dunford said.

The second lion then charged and got hold of the kudu by its throat.

Just like that, the buck was brought down in the middle of the road and was dead in minutes, Dunford said.

The lions fed on the carcass for about half an hour before dragging it into the bushes.
