Cape Town Cops Bust Clothing Shop Selling ‘Police Uniforms’

Major General Thembisile Patekile

A tip-off recently led authorities to a Cape Town clothing shop selling “police uniforms”, acting provincial commissioner Major General Thembisile Patekile said on Wednesday.

This, he said, may be linked to reports of supposed officers committing armed robberies across the province.

“The matter is still under investigation to confirm whether these uniforms are authentic or replicas,” he said.

Police were tipped off to the business after a man was arrested for impersonating an officer during a robbery.

“During questioning, he pointed the police towards the shop as this is where he had apparently purchased his get-up,” he said.

The shop has been closed as police probe the business.

It is illegal for civilians to be in possession of police uniforms and equipment and only the official police service provider may produce it, Patekile pointed out.

“Those who find themselves in possession of [police uniforms and equipment] who were unaware [they are contravening the law] must bring it back so that it can be destroyed. It can’t just be thrown away either,” he said.

“If you see someone who is not in the force in possession of police gear, report it as it is a criminal offence.”
