A Muslim Shop in the UK Was Just Firebombed While People Were Inside

Kashmir Meat & Poultry, a halal butcher shop owned and operated by a Muslim man, was attacked with a “petrol bomb” this Monday evening in the West Midlands in England.

Bashir Hussain, who was managing the store at the time of the attack, luckily escaped with only minor bruising from being struck by the weapon itself, but most of the store itself was destroyed by the flames.

The owner, Jamal Hussain, was dismayed by the attack and still seemed in shock when he spoke with reporters.

The incident is currently being investigated by the West Midlands police, who are already reviewing CCTV footage for clues on a possible suspect. The culprit was described as “white, six feet tall, and wearing a blue jacket,” according to Birmingham Mail.

Brigg Ford, a spokesperson for the authorities, said, “We cannot say definitively that it was a racist attack.”

Mary Walker, a woman from Pleck in Walsall where the attack took place, said racial tensions have been on the rise in the community since the Brexit vote. “I have overheard people making comments to Eastern European residents and Muslims that they should go home now,” she told reporters.

She also related her confidence that the investigation would eventually reveal racial motives behind the attack. “I am sure it will be related to the referendum result, I have no doubt,” she said.

Online reports of hate crimes in the four days after the Brexit referendum rose 57% compared to the same days in the previous week, according to the National Police Chiefs’ Council. British citizens have also taken to Twitter and other social media to report first-hand accounts of violence, harassment, and vandalism aimed at immigrants and minorities.

Most of the attacks thus far seem to center on members of Polish and Muslim communities. However, every German car on a London street was vandalized with swastikas and other hateful messages in one incident. Many commentators have linked the rise in racial and political attacks to the anti-immigrant rhetoric used by various prominent leaders of the Leave campaign.
