The UPND Vice-President with an escort of youths clad in red berets and party fatigues brought the area to a virtual standstill as the commotion played out in the Kasama central business district.
Mwamba however claims he went to the market to buy vegetables and fish at the market and people descended on him with the view of talking to him.
“I took the day to visit Location market with a view to also buy some fish and vegetables. Being popular in this area the shoppers and marketeers descended on me and my family in solidarity.
Surprisingly, the Police led by a D. Kakompe and in full riot gear came with orders to arrest me for what they said was unlawful assembly. Their intention was to embarrass me by arresting me in full view of the people at the market.” he contended.
But one of the witnesses says the former Defence Minister is playing politics as there was no way he could have gone to the market to buy vegetables with an army of cadres.
“What is surprising is that GBM wants to claim he is being harassed by the Police when he went ku Location with cadres, surely who buys fish with cadres?” Emmanuel Mambwe asked.
Kasama has become a hotbed of political activity after the nullification of the seat by the Speaker of the National Assembly.
The Patriotic Front has adopted local businessman Kelvin Sampa to contest the seat whilst Mwamba is yet to expressly indicate whether or not he will run on the UPND.
