Angola Drafts Action Plan to Fight Against Ivory Trafficking

Luanda — The Ministry of Environment and partners drafted the National Action Plano n Ivory 2015/2017, which is aimed to fight against the illegal ivory trade in Angola and the reinforcement of the inspection at airport and land borders.
The document was drafted under the compliance with the implementation of the Convention on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, (CITES) and the guidelines of the Permanent Committee of the same act.
Speaking to Angop on the occasion of the 22 May, World Biodiversity Day, the technician of the Ministry of Environment, Filipe Kodo, said that Angola has been affected by the illegal ivory trade and many of these products are from some neighbouring countries, passing by the country to other international markets.
Angola is one of three countries of the world that worries the international community as it serves intercontinental transit for the large scale of the illegal ivory trade, according to data of the referred convention.
Cambodja and Lao PDR are the other countries also considered concern of CITES, after Angola.
In face of this situation, Angola is trying to reverse the current scenery with reinforcement of inspection, its legislation and awareness campaigns amongst the people, according to Filipe Kodo.
