LONG serving African football boss Issa Hayatou’s reign ended in embarrassing fashion after he was defeated 34 –20 by his challenger- Madagascar FA president Ahmed in elections held in Addis Abbaba Ethiopia on Thursday.
Ahmed needed just 28 votes to land the Caf presidency but bagged 34 votes a clear demonstration that Zifa president Philip Chiyangwa’s camp had done its home work.
Chiyangwa, who is also Cosafa president has been the campaign manager for Ahmed and had a disciplinary case pending for describing Caf executives as “cowards” and “cronies” for not standing up to Hayatou.
But with Ahmed having won the election, the disciplinary case may have died a natural death.
Caf said it made the decision to proceed with the case against Chiyangwa at its executive committee meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, two days before the election.
The 70-year-old Hayatou has been seeking an eighth term in office that would have extend his 29-year reign having been at the helm of the African game since 1988.
Chiyangwa was also involved in a dispute with Caf over a party he hosted in Zimbabwe last month which was attended by Fifa president Gianni Infantino and other African federation heads.
Fearing Chiyangwa was using his birthday party to plot Hayatou downfall Caf said the meeting was against its regulations and an attempt to “destabilise” the soccer governing body.
