UK politician Carl Sargeant kills himself after being suspended over ‘shocking’ sex allegations from multiple women

Former Welsh Government minister Carl Sargeant, 48,is believed to have taken his own life at home in Connah’s Quay, North Wales.Mr Sargeant was suspended by Labour on Friday and said he wanted an independent investigation ‘to allow me to clear my name’.

At least three women are believed to have made allegations of sexual misconduct against him – although no details were revealed by the Labour Party – but he described them as ‘shocking and distressing’ before his death. Mr Sargeant, who served on the Welsh Assembly for 14 years, was found dead at around 11.30am this morning and police say they are not treating it as suspicious.

His wife Bernie, 48, and children Jack, 23, and Lucy, 25, are being comforted by family today. A statement released on their behalf said they are ‘devastated beyond words’ and said he was ‘the glue that bound us together’.

Mr Sargeant was a ‘much loved husband, father and friend’, a statement released by the family said.

‘Carl was a much loved husband, father and friend. He wasn’t simply a part of our family. He was the glue that bound us together. He was the heart of our family. We loved him so very much,’ it said.

‘He was the most kind and caring husband, father, son and friend.

‘We are devastated beyond words, and we know our grief will be shared by all those who knew and loved him. We are in shock and grief. We ask that our privacy is respected at this time.’

North Wales Police said its officers were investigating Mr Sargeant’s death but say it was not suspicious.
