Apple unveils waterproof and wireless iPhone 7 with NO headphone jack and new dual lens camera

After months of anticipation, Apple has finally revealed the iPhone 7 and a new version of its Apple Watch.

The new iPhone 7 will dump the headphone socket for stereo speakers, and boasts longer batter life, while the larger iPhone 7 plus also has a new dual lens camera system.

Tim Cook opened the presentation at the the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco with a video of him taking part in a carpool karaoke with James Corden, singing along to One Republic before they were joined by Pharrell to give Cook some fashion advice.

‘I’m so glad James got me here on time, I may have lost my voice,’ he said, before revealed new episodes of the show will debut on iTunes next year.

In a rare slip, Apple accidentally unveiled the device itself with a tweet minutes before the unveiling – before deleting it seconds later.

‘The iPhone has become truly a cultural phenomenon,’ Cook said.

‘We’ve now sold over a billion of them.

‘This makes it the best selling product of its kind in the history of the world.’

‘It’s the best iPhone we have ever created – this is iPhone 7,’ said Cook.

‘It makes all the things you do every day better’.

Apple’s Jony Ive revealed the handset’s new aluminium design, before Phil Schiller explained its features.

It comes with a new high gloss ‘jet black’ colour and ‘invisible’ antenna lines.

There is also a second black colour, and Schiller joked ‘we call it -black’.

It features a newly designed home button which is now customisable and has a new force feedback feature.

It is also now water and dust resistant.

‘Even the clumsiest of us don’t have to worry’.

The camera has received a major update, Schiller said.

In the smaller iPhone 7, it has been boosted with a new sensor to steady shaking hands, and a new wider lens.

However, the larger iPhone 7 plus now has two lenses – a wide angle and a telephoto lens.

A new button in the software allows users to switch to a telephoto lens, and zoom in using a finger on screen up to 10x.

It also creates a depth map of images, allowing people to easily keep subjects in focus.

A new ‘portrait’ mode activates this, adding a ‘depth effect’, which will be made available later this year in an update.

It also has a new 7mp front facing camera for selfies.

The iPhone 7s screen has also been boosted, and is now 25% brighter.

Earlier, Cook revealed Apple Music now has 17 million paid subscribers, and showed off a redesigned interface for the software.

Cook also revealed the app store now has 140 billion downloads, and is growing at 106% year on year.

He also revealed that Nintendo will be bringing its Mario series to the iPhone.

Jeff Williams of Apple revealed the new version of the firm’s Watch, called series 2, priced at $369, while the original will remain on sale for $269.

The new version is swimproof and includes a built in GPS feature to track workouts.

It has a new white ceramic colour, and a new version created with Nike and aimed at runners.

Nike says it is ‘your perfect running partner’ and has a new Nike app to make starting runs easier and quicker.

It uses sound to eject water from the speaker at the end of a swim.

A new version of the WatchOS software, which adds new capabilities such as the ability to perform breathing exercises, and a new way to make apps more easily accessible and faster.

The new Watch also has a 50% faster processor and new graphics processor to boost app performance.

It has a new, brighter display which Apple says it the brightest it has ever made.

John Hanke of Niantic labs said the firm has a special version of Pokemon Go for the Watch, expected to launch within days.

Shigeru Myamoto of Nintendo revealed the first game for the iPhone will be called Super Mario Run.

He is also expected to unveil a new version of Apple’s Watch, along with the firm’s new iOS software.

In July the tech giant announced it had sold the billionth unit of its smartphone, first introduced in 2007 and the product that has become the driving force behind Apple’s rise to one of the most valuable companies in the world.

Chief executive Tim Cook will lead the unveiling at a live event in San Francisco, and has previously spoken of the success of the device.

‘iPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history,’ he said at the time of the billionth sale.

‘It’s become more than a constant companion – iPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day.’

Reports have also suggested Apple could use the event to introduce a new version of the Apple Watch, the firm’s wearable device that is yet to be given a hardware upgrade since it was launched in early 2015.

Although Apple is notoriously secretive, almost every detail of the new device has already been revealed if a major leak is to be believed.

The new features are expected to include a waterproof design, two new colours, and wireless headphones.

The image on the invitation used is of coloured dots, which could represent new colours available, or may portray water droplets, suggesting the phone will be waterproof.

A detailed rundown from KGI Securities analyst Min-Chi Kuo, who has a good track record of correctly relaying information on Apple hardware before it launches, was obtained by Mac Rumours and confirms many of the predicted features of the iPhone 7.

It appears Apple really will be taking the unpopular step of completely ditching the headphone port on its next-generation handsets.

The technology firm is said to be bundling ‘EarPods’ with a Lightning connector, as well as a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter in the box.

iPhone owners will also be able to use wireless Bluetooth headphones.

Getting rid of the traditional headphone port will free up more room for a new speaker, and possibly a new sensor to improve Force Touch operation – Apple’s touchscreen and haptic feedback technology.
