President Sirleaf Dedicates Cassava Processing Center – Lauds Welthungerhilfe, EU

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has congratulated Welthungerhilfe and the European Union for the significant effort made to construct Cassava Processing Center for the people of Kormah Town, Bomi County. Speaking at the turning over ceremony of the Cassava Processing Center to the people of Kormah over the weekend, President Sirleaf said, “I thank our partners and friends for giving great opportunity to the people of Kormah and I appreciate them so much because they brought new light to the people of Kormah,”President Sirleaf expressed happiness.
President Sirleaf then urged the people of Kormah to maintain the Cassava Processing Center and that they should work assiduously to produce more cassava.
Also speaking at the program, the Head of the Cooperation European Union, Stefano Ellero said the successful project result in Kormah, gave him the feeling that there will be lots of cooperation with the Government of Liberia and the community people as well.
He explained that few years ago, President Sirleaf made request to European Union, and that the European Union accepted her request and donated 40 million Euro for next projects in Liberia to support agricultural sectors.
He praised the people of Kormah for the commitment made to working with the partners and urged them to maintain the Cassava Processing Center and that they must continue with their cassava farming.
The Country Director of Welthungerhilfe, Madam AsjaHanano, said German Agro, has been in Liberia since 2003, to support the people of Liberia and work with communities in agricultural sectors, and also improved water sanitation, hygiene and infrastructures.
She said Gernman Agro main principle worlwide is helping people, to help themselves. She also lauded the people of Kormah for working hard to produce cassava and also congratulated the European Union for the commitment and support given to the people of Kormah.
The Head of Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture, Nutrition and Income (UPANI), Madam Irene Sleven said the project is a (UPANI) project aimed at enhancing food security and nutrition in Tubmanburg and Monrovia.
She said the project focuses on four pillars; the first pillar of the project is focused on agriculture production, and partners are working together to strengthen agriculture production in the community, and teaching new improved planting methods and old planting methods.
According to her, the second pillar of the project teaches people access to finance and she has understood that the people of Kormah have established saving loans, because the majority of the members are women and by saving money will enable women to invest in their children and have something for themselves, something she described as being very essential.
She explained that, the third pillar of the project is focused on food security and nutrition, and that the partners will teach people how to take care of their bodies, especially women and how to breastfeed a child or children because personal hygiene is very important and that all trainings are done in Kormah.
Furthermore, she stated that the four pillars of the project focus on working with the Government of Liberia to help strengthen food security and the partners are also working with the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC).
She said development takes effort, time and patience and development is not something that should be done hastily, therefore people should always be patient. She added that the project in Kormah is a good example of development.
“What I observed is that of the prices at the market and I look forward to seeing prices reasonably reduced, “she stated.
Meanwhile the Town Chief of Kormah Town, J. Momo Johnson said the people of Kormah have generated over 2 million Liberian Dollars and deposited it in saving accounts.
He lauded Welthungerhilfe and European Union for the great opportunity provided to his people.”Let me admit that our partners have taught us how to save money and right now we have saved over LD$2 million in this town, “He expresses joy.
“Today, our partners have turned over Cassava Processing Center including machines; thank so much for helping my people,” Town Chief J. Momo lauded partners.
Meanwhile, Cassava Processing Center Project was constructed in President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s home, Kormah Town, by Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture, Nutrition and Income (UPANI) and implemented by Welthungerhilfe (WHH) in Partnership with ACF and RUAF and funded by the European Union.
