Buhari Vows to Recover Stolen Funds

Immediate past minister and deputy chairman, National Planning Commission (NPC), Dr. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, yesterday faulted claims by President Muhammadu Buhari that his administration met an empty treasury.

Sulaiman reported that $2billion was left in the Excess Crude Account (ECA) as at May 29, 2015, adding that the sum would have been higher but for the insistence of governors to share the funds.

LEADERSHIP recalls that Buhari had at an interactive session with journalists on Monday in Abuja said his government met “virtually an empty treasury”.

But the ex-minister, who said Jonathan must not be criminalized and painted as a plunderer before Nigerians, described the report as “unscientific and unfair,” insisting that Jonathan “left behind close to $30billion.”

“Government can’t tell us that there is no Excess Crude Account (ECA) and Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), or are we saying the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and related agencies had not in the last one month been generating revenue?” he queried.

“Until they are able to prove they had no receipts from these government agencies in the last one month before Nigerians can now buy into Mr. President’s claims of an empty treasury.
