Zambia Grows Cold Feet in Pilato Case

Musician Fumba Chama, alias Pilato, on June 24, 2015, appeared before Magistrate Aridah Chulu for commencement of trial. Following an application for adjournment from the state, Magistrate Chulu adjourned the matter to July 13th, 22nd and 29th for trial.

The state contended that it was not able to present its witnesses as the same had not been summoned yet. However, one of the defense lawyers, Marshal Muchende objected to the application stating that the accused had to travel from Ndola every time he had an appearance hence the need to expedite the trial. Mr. Muchende also asked the court to put it on record that the state was growing cold feet in proceeding with the case as evidenced by the application. After further argument, consensus was reached between the prosecution and defense. The state also announced its intentions to present 10 witnesses in total.

Chama stands accused of conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace after he produced a satirical song that depicts President Lungu’s Journey from his inaugural office of MP in Chawama constituency to Presidency.

Meanwhile Chama’s bail has been extended following the adjournment. MISA Zambia is among the international and local commentators closely following the trial. The defense is being represented by Marshal Muchende of Dindi and Company.
