He Just Wanted Them To Pay For His Goods And They Killed Him For It

Mozambican national killed in xenophobic attack, Alexandra Township, South Africa - 18 Apr 2015Two men have been found guilty of the murder of Emmanuel Sithole, who was stabbed to death during a wave of xenophobic violence in Alexandra in April.

The SABC reported that Mthinta Bhengu and Sifundi Mzimzela were found guilty in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The third accused, a minor, was purportedly found guilty of theft.

They had been charged with Sithole’s murder after they were alleged to have stabbed Sithole in the streets of Alexandra on April 18.

The attack‚ which happened during a flare-up of xenophobic violence in Johannesburg’s Alexandra township‚ was captured by Sunday Times lensman James Oatway and published on the newspaper’s front page.

It was believed that they had taken cigarettes from the street vendor without paying.

They attacked and killed him when he demanded payment.

A fourth man initially charged with the murder was set free after his lawyer applied for his client to be discharged‚ arguing that he was a mere bystander and had not actively participated in the attack on Sithole.

Magistrate Lucas van der Schyff agreed and ruled that the state had failed to prove that he had a case to answer.

Their last appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court was held in camera because of the presence of the minor.
