Rick Ross To Peform in Botswana

Rick Ross, the “Big boss” will be performing in Botswana on New Year’s Eve.While many Hip-hop pundits on social media question the legitimacy of the event, one of the show organisers, Alice Naygilit told Showbiz that the event is authentic since they have engaged big companies like MTN Business, Trace Urban, Trace Africa and Kopanong FM. She said they have been organising urban culture events since last year when they hosted an event in Phakalane.

“It was small scale, but we managed to attract interest from MTN Business because they were happy with our production,” she said. She said without MTN Business, the event would not have been possible.

She said their events focus on Hip-Hop and R&B therefore Brand Resolve decided to bring Rick Ross on his current status as one of the most influential rappers.

“We got in touch with Ross’s agents and the deal is on,” she said. Naygilit said Batswana would be happy for a chance to see Rick Ross perform because he is not past his prime.

Real name William Leonard Roberts II, Rick Ross needs no introduction and is expected to pull a large crowd in what would be a turning point for the local Hip-hop scene. The platinum selling, Grammy Award-winning US rapper is expected to perform songs from his eighth studio album Black Market that was released late last year. ‘Ricky Rozay’, as he is often called, perform will definitely be the perfect way to hype this coming holiday season.

The 40-year-old MMG founder has worked with various artists like Lil Wayne, Wale, Meek Mill, P Diddy, DJ Khaled and French Montana just to name a few. Before signing his first record deal, Ross was a correctional officer for a few years, something that has led to him being ridiculed in the media owing to his history of selling drugs.

His very first single that was released commercially was Hustlin’ and it penetrated the market. Under his MMG record label, the Aston Martin Music singer has released his studio albums, Deeper Than Rap (2009), Teflon Don (2010), God Forgives, I Don’t (2012), Mastermind, Hood Billionaire (2014) and Black Market (2015).

The last US rapper to come to Botswana was Ja Rule in 2014, but he did not leave a huge mark because he did not suit the ‘nu skul’ crop of Hip-Hop/Rap. local entertainers like Euri, DJ Izzy and Apollo Diablo were quick to share the good news on social media on Monday.

It has become a norm in Botswana for music promoters to use big names in order to hype up their shows. In the end fans never get their money’s worth with rumours of artists failing to pitch up only coming during the day of show.

Tickets are already available at WebTickets, the standard is P500, golden circle is P800 and VIP is P2,000. MTN Business from South Africa powers the event.
