President Mnangagwa’s bodyguards airlifted to SA… said to be in ‘critical’ condition after bomb blast

An explosion rocked the stadium where President Mnangagwa was addressing

a campaign rally on Saturday

Two of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa bodyguards were this week reportedly airlifted to South Africa for “further medical treatment” following a bombing incident last month in Bulawayo.

The incident, which occurred after Mnangagwa addressed a ruling Zanu-PF party rally in the second largest city, claimed two lives and left over 40 people injured.

Mnangagwa himself escaped unhurt.

According to Daily News, the condition of the two bodyguards was said to be “critical”.

The report said that they were flown to South Africa on Monday following recommendation by local specialist doctors, who had been attending to them.

This came as NewsDay reported on Friday that the southern African country’s vice president Kembo Mohadi was still hospitalised in South Africa following the same bombing incident.

Recovering from home

Mohadi and Zanu-PF chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, were airlifted to South Africa for medical treatment after they were injured during the incident, according to the state-owned Herald newspaper.

The report said that Mohadi was still in South Africa where he was undergoing physiotherapy, while Muchinguri-Kashiri was now back in Zimbabwe and was “recovering from home”.

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga was quoted as saying: “We speak to him (Mohadi) on a daily basis. He is feeling much better and undergoing physiotherapy and we hope to see him soon assuming his official duties.”

NewsDay said that several Bulawayo youths had been picked up for questioning following the incident, but released without charge.
