PROPERTY worth millions of dollars has been destroyed after a fire razed Gwanda’s Power Sales branch.The fire started just after workers closed for business at 5pm
The fire, which reportedly started in the kitchen, attracted thousands of residents resulting in the Buawayo-Johannesburg Highway being barricaded at the 125km peg.
The road passes through the Beitbridge, the country’s busiest and most strategic border post.Reports say the municipality of Gwanda engineering department responded late to a fire call despite being located opposite the burning building.
Sources said the main fire tender which was recently acquired is down.A former Gwanda mayor said he was told Wednesday afternoon that stocktake was due Thursday at Power Sales. The former mayor said he was also told that about $20 000 was missing.“But this is not the first time things have happened at Power Sales,” the former mayor said.
By 20:00 hrs the fire was under control although it had not been completely put off.
