Durban’s Gateway’s Theatre of Shopping is a unique shopping and entertainment complex with more than 400 outlets offering anything and everything a shopper could want, from clothing and accessories to high-tech equipment, restaurants, stationers, jewellers and a host of entertainment options.

Half an hour north of Durban, in the upmarket suburb of Umhlanga, lies the multi-level mega-shopping and entertainment complex know as the Gateway Theatre of Shopping. The largest shopping destination in South Africa, it is a mix of more than 400 retail outlets complemented by a range of entertainment destinations – all under one roof.

Gateway is without doubt a shoppers’ paradise, with stores offering everything from fashion and footwear to photographic equipment; books and stationery; jewellery; groceries; art; CDs and DVDs; furniture; curios; eye care and optometrists; banking and forex facilities; and computer and technical gadgetry.

On the entertainment side, the massive centre features more than 30 restaurants and coffee shops, a wave house, 10-pin bowling alley, skate park, go-karting, bumper cars, indoor soccer, an indoor funfair, two separate movie complexes and a 4D cinema, a hotel – the Gateway Hotel – and a science centre with 250 interactive exhibits.

The signature Tony Hawk skate park comprises six sections, including a near-vertical ramp and two concrete bowls, while the wave house is used by local surfers, bodyboarders and wake-boarders honing their skills, much to the delight of spectators.

How to get here
Take the N2 north from Durban for about half an hour. The turn-off is clearly signposted.

Best time to visit
Any time of the year Gateway is buzzing, but it becomes extremely busy over the festive period as Christmas approaches.

Around the area
The upmarket Umhlanga beaches are down the hill from Gateway towards the coast, while King Shaka International Airport is a bit further north along the N2.

You’ll be doing a lot of walking, but carts may be hired for kiddies, and wheelchairs are available for the disabled.
