The Confederation of African Football Fines Nigeria for Overcrowded Stadium During Egypt Afcon Clash

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has slammed Nigeria with a $5,000 fine over two offences committed during an AFCON qualifier against Egypt in Kaduna in March 2016.
CAF, after its Disciplinary Committee meeting, found Nigeria culpable of not providing adequate security at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, for allowing excess spectators at the same venue for the AFCON clash against the Pharaohs.
The Africa soccer ruling body on Monday said Nigeria must pay a $5,000 fine for the two offences; warning that in case a similar incident occurs, further sanctions would be applied.
On March 29, the NFF, in agreement with the Kaduna State Government, threw open the gates to the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, thus leading to over 50, 000 spectators cramming into the 15, 000-capacity stadium.
There were ugly scenes of fans clinging to the flood lights, scoreboard and the camera stands in the stadium which was viewed dangerous by CAF.
The game ended in a 1-1 draw with Mohammed Salah scoring a late equaliser for the Pharaohs and having failed to win the return leg in Alexandria the hopes of a place at the next Cup of Nations in Gabon for Nigeria was effectively dashed.
Meanwhile aside Nigeria, CAF also announced sanctions against other erring countries and clubs including Etoile du Sahel who were reported to CAF by Enyimba.
CAF fined the Tunisian giants 5000 USD while player Ahmed Akaichi and Coach Faouzi Benzarti got match bans for dissent against the referees that handled their game against Enyimba.
