Iran to present Syria peace plan to U.N.

Bashar al-Assad

The Iranian foreign minister announced Wednesday that the country will present a peace plan for Syria to the United Nations.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hussein Amir Abdollahian broke the news in an interview wit the al-Mayadeen news channel.

The plan will outline Iran’s effort to settle the crisis in Syria. The news comes after Iran’s 2014 proposal of a Syrian peace plan,

Abdollahian denied claims on the details of the peace plan, saying these will be fleshed out once the plan is formally presented to the U.N. secretary general and after consultations between the Iranian and Syrian governments.

Iran’s capital Tehran is also hosting Syrian and Russian officials to discuss solutions to the crisis.

Since March 2011, Syria has been dealing with internal crises. Violence has claimed a total of more than 230,000 lives, while new figures show that over 76,000 individuals have died in 2014 alone, including thousands of children. The crisis has also allowed the Islamic State (IS) to flourish. Since 2011, Iran has remained a firm supporter of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.
