German envoy visits Algeria to discuss deportation of illegal immigrants

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s advisor on immigration, Jan Hacker, has visited Algeria to discuss with the Algerian government procedures to deport hundreds of illegal Algerian immigrants who live in Germany, informed Algerian sources said.

The Minister of Interior and Local Communities, Noureddine Badawi, met with the German special advisor in Algiers without disclosing the content of their meeting, Algeria’s Al-Fajr newspaper reported yesterday.

According to the German interior ministry, as many as 3,784 Algerians requested asylum in Germany in 2016 while 169 Algerians without documents were deported to their homeland last year.

However, according to German officials, the number is still limited compared with the number of migrants who must leave the country.

The newspaper reported that Algeria had announced its readiness to cooperate with Berlin in deporting its nationals residing illegally in Germany.
