AU PSC Members express surprise at Morocco absence from meeting to discuss Western Sahara issue

Members of the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) have expressed surprise and disappointment at Morocco’s deliberate absence from their meeting on Monday in Addis Ababa to discuss the latest developments related to the Western Sahara issue.

They were also astonished by the fact that the Kingdom of Morocco did not reply to the official invitation to attend this meeting, which they considered to be a clear contradiction to what was announced by the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, in his speech during the final session of the African Union Summit in January, in which he confirmed the intention of Morocco to cooperate constructively with the African Union in order to achieve peace, security and stability in the continent.

The Peace and Security Council held its first session on Monday, after Morocco joined the African Union during the last summit, to listen to briefings on the latest developments related to the Western Sahara issue, in the presence of Foreign Minister, Mohamed-Salem Ould Salek, the Minister Delegate for African Affairs, Hamdi El-Khalil Meyara, the Permanent Representative of the Sahrawi Republic to the African Union, Lemman Ba-ali.
