More than 600 candidates apply to run for Iran presidential elections

More than 600 candidates have applied to stand in the forthcoming presidential elections  Iranian media reported.

At least 638 have registered at the Ministry of Interior in Tehran in the first three days of the process through Thursday.

Registration closes on Saturday.

With no requirements for age or scientific qualification, the Ministry’s surroundings looked like a festival square, in light of the high turnout to run for election. “Everyone is running, so I decided to run as well,” said one candidate, who asked not to be named.

The Guardian Council, a clerical body that oversees elections, is expected to bar most candidates and will announce an approved list by April 27.
