U.S. Congress Reiterates Support to Saharawi Cause

US Congress has reiterated its support to Western Sahara people’s cause by re-establishing Western Sahara Caucus, which brings together US Democrat and Republican Congressmen working for the promotion of the Saharawi cause in the United States.

The Committee on House Administration approved Monday the Congressional Western Sahara Caucus, which was “formed with the intent of highlighting the needs for self-determination and human rights monitoring for Western Sahar,” a US House of Representatives statement said.

Created initially in July 2013 and renewed this year, Western Sahara Caucus is a bi-partisan body, co-chaired by Republican Congressman Joseph R. Pitts (Pennsylvania), a fervent defender of the Saharawi cause, and Democrat Congressman John Conyers (Michigan), a new co-chairman who took over from Betty McCollum, and who is a supporter of human rights protection, known for his contribution in favour of the civic rights of the African-American community.

In the statement Rep. Conyers said “the re-establishment of this Western Sahara Caucus will be important to encouraging the Obama Administration to use its leverage in the United Nations to resolve the last colonial issue on its agenda for the African continent.”

“While the State Department played an important role in renewing the UN peacekeeping mission for Western Sahara, I hope that Congress can push for a greater emphasis on human rights monitoring and scheduling the referendum necessary to resolve the long running controversy.”
