Nigeria’s Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Survives Car Crash

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, escaped death by whiskers yesterday, while travelling on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The unfortunate incident occurred not long after he left the 10th memorial service of his late wife, Mrs. Stella Obasanjo in Abeokuta.

One of those who witnessed the accident said the former president was on his way to attend the 80th birthday ceremony of pool magnate, Sir Kessington Adebunkola Adebutu, when one of the rear tyres of the sports utility vehicle he was travelling in burst.

The accident, according to the witness, occurred shortly after the Sagamu interchange on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Obasanjo was said to have alighted from his vehicle unscathed and joined another vehicle in his convoy and continued the journey to Lagos.

The former president, according to a close source left the country afterwards.

Confirming the incident, one of his aides, who also preferred anonymity, said the mishap did not create any havoc to him or his convoy.

He said the former president had arrived Cote d’ Ivoire where he would monitor the country’s general election.

“There was a burst tyre which did not create any havoc to him or his convoy, as he immediately moved into another vehicle to continue his journey.

“As I speak with you now, we are already in Cote d’ Ivoire to monitor the country’s general elections. He (former president) is expected back in the country on Thursday,” the aide said.
