Malnutrition Kill 1,000 Nigerian Kids Daily

Child SacrificeThe United Nations Children’s Fund says nearly a thousand Nigerian children die every day from causes related to malnutrition a total 361,000 each year.

The Fund’s chief of nutrition, Arjan De Wagt, told a news conference in Abuja that the rates of malnutrition remained high, with Nigeria accounting for 10 percent of about 17.3 million children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) around the world.

Two out of three children with SAM live in northern Nigeria, where 11 states are most affected, said De Wagt.

UNICEF has called for more resources to scale up treatment under CMAM, which provides ready-to-use therapeutic foods (a high protein paste of peanut butter, milk, vegetable oil and mineral vitamins) for children at sites where they are treated on out-patient basis.
