292 on trial for attempting to kill Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi

Some 292 people have been referred for trial in a military court in Egypt accused of attempting to assassinate President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, judicial sources revealed yesterday.

Head of the defence team, Islam Salama Islam Salama said in a statement yesterday: “The military authorities today referred 292 to military courts, and stopped the renewal of their detention periods.”

The defendants include 151 who are in custody and 141 who are being tried in absentia.

They are accused of both trying to assassinate Al-Sisi and being part of terrorist groups including Daesh.

Since coming into power in a military coup in 2013, Al-Sisi has cracked down on opposition groups and listed a number of them as terrorist organisations. Thousands of people who have opposed his rule have been thrown in jail accused of joining terror groups.
