Alick Macheso Attacked Over ‘Mugabe Links’

SUNGURA musician Alick Macheso was, at the weekend, heckled by revellers while performing in Harare over his alleged support for President Robert Mugabe.

The popular musician’s show at Highfield’s Machipisa Shopping Centre was briefly halted Friday night as fans demanded that he declares his political affiliation.

Revellers shouted at Macheso, asking him to stop performing until “you tell us your political affiliation”.

“Can you tell us which political party you support before we cause this end of this show,” some of the fans shouted in Shona.

“We hear you are going to the UK together with Tuku (Oliver Mtukudzi); we want to assure you that your shows are going to flop.

“People are angry with you because of your (ties) to Zanu PF and Mugabe.

“So it is in your best interest to declare your political affiliation before you guys are humiliated,” one of the fans said while others continued shouting forcing Macheso to briefly stopped performing because of the noise.

Responding, the Sungura star insisted that he had no links with any political movement.

“I do not do politics. I am a musician and I am not affiliated to any political party,” he said.

The show later proceeded but Macheso appeared to have been affected but the hectoring.

The development comes amid plans by Zimbabweans in the diaspora to picket Macheso’s joint shows with Mtukudzi in the United Kingdom this weekend.

The two artists, arguably the country’s finest musicians, have riled some Zimbabweans for allegedly backing Mugabe and his Zanu PF party.

In 2012 Macheso shed tears in front of Mugabe after he was invited for a hand shake with the veteran leader.

He had been hired by government to entertain the crowd gathered for that year’s Defence Forces Day commemorations at the National Sports Stadium.

Humbled to be called up by the President, Macheso went down on his knees before bowing his head touching the ground and shaking hands with Mugabe while tears flowed from his cheeks.

Mtukudzi, on the other hand, has also been criticized for performing at Zanu PF’s One Man Million march, which was held in Harare in May.
