Tanzania to settle nurses salary arrears

Dodoma — THE government is determined to settle all claims for nurses in Kisarawe District Council which are still pending, the Deputy Minister for Regional Administration and Local Government, Mr Aggrey Mwanri, told the National Assembly.

He said that in the 2014/2015 financial year, the government paid a total of 55,150,728.95 to nurses with different claims from the district council, while in a move to alleviate the problem, in the 2015/2016 budget, a sum of 112,594,459/- had been set aside for the district council for the same purpose.

Allocation of such a big amount, the deputy minister pointed out, would reduce significantly the claims by the servants from the health sector, including nurses.

The deputy minister was answering a question by Selemani Jafo (Kisarawe – CCM), who wanted to know when claims for nurses from the district council, including overtime allowances and for difficult working in difficult environment, would be settled.

Mr Mwanri pointed out that Kisarawe Health Department has a total of 30 health stations, which are one district hospital, three health institutions and 26 dispensaries.

The department, he said, had a total of 432 servants and among them 248, which is 57 per cent are nurses. He admitted that for certain period such employees have been claiming several demands totalling 366,606,230/- and among such amount, 103, 264,070.23, which is 28 percent is for nurses.

In a move aimed at reducing unsettled claims from health officers, the deputy minister said that in 2000 the government abolished hardship allowances and, instead, took initiatives to increase salaries in the health sector to improve pension payments.

Answering a supplementary question by Suzan Lyimo (Special Seats-Chadema) on government plans to increase payments for doctors and other health officers to avoid them to look for green pastures abroad.

Mr Mwanri said that the government would put in place a good working environment for medical staff.
