Sudan peace agreement signed in Qatar

The Sudanese government and Sudan Liberation Army/Movement (SLA/M) (The Second Revolution) led by Abu al Qasim Imam Haj signed a peace agreement in Doha on Monday as per the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.

The initial agreement between both the sides was signed recently in N’Djamena of Chad Republic.

The agreement signing ceremony was attended by Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs HE Ahmed bin Abdullah al Mahmoud, Assistant to the President of Sudan Musa Mohamed Ahmed and Jeremiah Kingsley Mamabolo, the joint special representative for Darfur and head of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).

Mahmoud said the Doha Document for Peace belongs to the people of Darfur.

“The Doha Document for Peace in Darfur that was ratified by the people and supported by the regional and international community provides a just solution for the cause of the conflict and is a result of the hard work of all the partners with close discussions with the people of Darfur. The document also became the basis of ending the struggle and initiating the rebuilding and development process in Darfur,” Mahmoud added.

Mahmoud also praised the example set by Liberation and Justice Movement back then, when it signed the document and chose the road of peace to help the people of Darfur achieve stability and development.

Mahmoud said it confirms the movement’s courage and determination to establish peace and make a new beginning for stability and development of the people of Darfur.

“The developmental projects agreed upon during the donors conference in Doha must be implemented to enable the people of the region to rebuild their economy,” he said, adding that”It was especially important now after the US eased some of the economic sanctions on Sudan .

Mahmoud added that work continues to end all tribal disputes in order to make Darfur peaceful as before.
Assistant to the President of Sudan Musa Mohamed praised Qatar for building five villages to accommodate the displaced refugees and its plan to build 10 more villages.

“We also thank Qatar for its initiative to establish Development Bank of Darfur,” Musa added.

The Head of the Sudan Liberation Movement / second revolution, Imam Abu al Qasim said the signing of the agreement is a victory of the will for peace over the agenda of war.

“It is the biggest mistake that we live in a war that increases the suffering of the citizens and disrupts development and progress,” he added.

For his part, UNAMID chief Mamabolo said,”We all must focus on the development of Darfur and improve the living condition of the people of Darfur.”
