United Nations’ Chilling Findings in South Sudan

MEMBERS of the Security Council, the United Nations’ supreme decision-making body, have made terrifying findings in crisis-torn South Sudan.
In a report released on Monday, officials reported people living in destitute conditions and terrified to leave civilian protection sites, parents struggling to feed their families and civil society activists trying to improve conditions for their fellow citizens despite threats to their own personal safety.
Members of the Security Council said the visit last week offered an opportunity for civil society actors to share their experience working on behalf of the South Sudanese people in the midst of a man-made political, humanitarian, and security crisis.
They are engaging directly with the Government of South Sudan to underscore that intimidation and threats toward civil society must cease immediately.
Leaders have been urged to allow civil society to carry out its work freely and focus on settling the conflict that has claimed scores of life and sent thousands fleeing.
The United States expressed outraged to learn that the South Sudanese government harassed and threatened civil society actors following the Council’s visit.
It condemned attempts by government to silence freedom of expression as well as restrictions on civil society actors who organised peacefully and provided constructive criticism.
“The voices of civil society must be elevated, not silenced,” said Department of State spokesperson.
