“Ethiopia is on the rise, its industries are growing and we seek to deepen our ties because we believe in our cooperation.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday addressed FDRE House of People’s Representatives as part of his two-day state visit to Ethiopia.

Prime Minster Netanyahu said that Ethiopia and Africa are on the rise, and “the relationship between us is rising to new heights.”

Highlighting the long-standing historical ties that exist between the two countries dating back to millennia and the burgeoning bilateral relations, Netanyahu said fruitful discussions were held to work together in agriculture, water, technology and space science to help improve the lives of ordinary Ethiopians by increasing agricultural productivity.

“Ethiopia is on the rise, its industries are growing and we seek to deepen our ties because we believe in our cooperation.” The bond of history and the values of common interest characterizes our friendship, the Premier added.

The Israeli Premier also told the Parliament that religious freedom and equality should be guaranteed all over the world, and the two countries should fight and stand together against extremism and terrorism as their barbaric acts have claimed the lives of women and children everywhere including Africa. “The terrorists see us as one entity, so we should go against them together as one and win the fight and doing so will shorten the time it would take for their demise,” he added.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Netanyahu said that ensuring security is one common issue between Israel and Africa, but it is not the only issue. He added that for far too long Africa was treated like an ‘afterthought’ by much of the world, but now that has changed as there is a clear sight of the potential in Africa and Ethiopia and expressed his readiness to working together and deepen ties.

Benjamin Netanyahu is the first sitting Israeli Prime Minister to visit Ethiopia and address the parliament.
