New Basas – Mauritius Expands Its Air Services Network

Mauritius has initialed new Bilateral Air Services Agreements (BASAs) with several countries thus providing for a total of 105 additional weekly frequencies to the Island State.

This is one of the main outcomes of the country’s recent participation in the International Civil Aviation Organisation – Air Services Negotiations Event (ICAN 2015) held from 19 to 23 October 2015 in Turkey.

In fact, a delegation led by the Secretary to Cabinet and Head of the Civil Service was in Antalya to attend the ICAN and to hold air services negotiations with Brazil, Republic of Congo, Finland, New Zealand, Nigeria, Portugal, Rwanda, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. The objective was to expand existing traffic rights, as well as create new traffic rights. Moreover, Memoranda of Understanding were signed with those nine countries during the ICAN.

The new BASAs initialed will provide, amongst others, code share and cooperative arrangements between Air Mauritius Ltd and the airlines of the other countries, including third country code share, and the operation of cargo service by the designated airlines of each country. The Mauritian Government has agreed to all procedures being completed before the signing of the agreements.

It is recalled that that ICAN brings together Member States to discuss air services agreement each year. The aim is to enable the expansion of air services network and enhance air services to facilitate the movement of people, goods and services around the world.
