Kenyan Musician Diana Chemutai, Chelele Attemps Suicide After Husband Took Her Kids

Recovering in the hospital
A popular Kalenjin musician has been hospitalised in Nakuru after she allegedly attempted suicide over a family dispute.

Diana Chemutai, known by her stage name Chelele, was rushed to Mediheal Hospital on Saturday.

She allegedly took a drug overdose upon finding her children taken by her husband, AP officer Eric Musila.

Musila was unavailable for comment.

Kalenjin Musicians Association CEO Benard Lang’at told the Star yesterday Chelele has suffered “psychological torture” for two years.

“Her husband has severally complained of unfaithfulness, which prompted him to leave with their two children from their Bomet home to his workplace.”

Early last month, Chelele filed for divorce at Bomet law courts but later settled the matter out of court.

Lang’at said the musician attempted suicide a day after taking part in a roadshow in Eldoret town.

She was informed her husband had taken their children and all household property to Nakuru, where his sister lives.

“Chelele went to Nakuru to trace the children and while there she tried to commit suicide,” Lang’at said.

He said the musician called several friends, telling them that she had decided to die.

“She told them to ask Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto to take care of her children upon her death,” Lang’at said.

One of her relatives told the Star Chelele’s condition has improved and she is ready to be discharged.

Lang’at said many musicians are going through hard times.

They should seek counselling and not resort to taking their lives, he said.
