Bernard Membe Says Farewell to Ministry

FOREIGN Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Bernard Membe officially bid farewell to his ministry’s employees, expressing contentment on achieving his goal to return home all retired embassy officers and ambassadors.

Mr Membe promised to ensure all those appointed to fill the positions left vacant by the retired officers and ambassadors take up offices before he leaves office.

He said his ministry received 3.3bn/- that will be used to ensure the officers and ambassadors who were appointed seven to eight years ago take up their posts in the respective countries, stressing that more funds will be availed to cater for everyone appointed.

Mr Membe who was officiating at the 9th Workers’ Council meeting of the ministry, noted that he will soon hold a meeting with all ambassadors, a meeting that he said was long overdue.

While bidding farewell to the ministry, Mr Membe said this is his last meeting with them, stressing that what he will be is in the hands of God.

He urged the workers to be proud to be working in the ministry because more than 40 per cent of officers from the ministry go on to work in the State House, giving a hint that that’s where he might be headed.

“It will not be possible for me to be the Minister for foreign affairs and international cooperation. What I will be is the secret of God.

But we must be very proud to be in this ministry because more than 40 per cent of officers from this ministry go on to work in the State House because we’ve been molded to follow work ethics,” he said.

He stressed that wherever he will be working, when faced with an opportunity to provide employment opportunity, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation will be the first on his list for consideration.

Mr Membe added that his ministry has recorded a number of achievements despite challenges including increasing various allowances such as workers’ over-time and extra duty allowances.

In her vote of thanks, the Assistant Director of Diaspora, Ms Rose Jairo, praised the minister for the many positive changes that have been witnessed in the ministry, including establishing the Diaspora Department.

She said the minister has the workers’ support in whatever he might decide to do in future.
