A Ugandan delegation yesterday arrived at Bunia township in eastern DR Congo to receive bodies of the four police officers who were killed by Congolese soldiers.

Although the Ugandan delegation was allowed to pick the bodies, the DR Congo government had not responded to four demands from Uganda government by yesterday.

Police spokesman Fred Enanga, said the bodies will be transported through Vurra border crossing in West Nile to Kampala where autopsies will be conducted.

“The delegation is already in DRC to receive the bodies of our fallen officers. I can’t tell when they will return, but when they are here, we shall definitely inform you,” he said yesterday.

Last Saturday, four police officers, including Sgt Faruk Waiswa, Cpl Biral Obara, Constable Moses Ochen and Constable Bernard Isingoma, were ambushed by DR Congo soldiers and shot as they responded to an illegal fishing incident on Lake Albert in the Ugandan waters.

Killed in unclear circumstances

Photographs taken after the attack show that one officer was captured alive and taken to the DR Congo side, but was later killed under unclear circumstances.

Mr Enanga said the composition of the delegation include the deceased’s supervisors from Ntoroko District and Foreign Affairs’ officials.

Uganda has threatened to use military force against DR Congo if attacks on its citizens ever re-occur on Ugandan soil.

Former International Relations state minister Okello Oryem said Uganda was still waiting for a response from DR Congo to its protest note, in which the government demanded an explanation for the killing of its officers.

Uganda’s Ambassador to Kinshasa James Kinobe could not respond to our inquiries as he was attending a day-long event.

However, Mr Jack Wamai Wamanga, a former diplomat and MP, said if DR Congo fails to respond to Uganda’s demands, it should be taken to the International Court of Justice rather than resorting to military option.
