Presidential Hopeful and TP Mazembe Owner Moise Katumbi Sentenced to Jail

Katumbi

Moise Katumbi, the Congolese presidential hopeful and owner of one of Africa’s biggest football clubs, TP Mazembe has been sentenced to 3 years in prison.

Katumbi, 51, has been found guilty of selling a property in Lubumbashi. The court ruling was made in Katumbi’s absence as he is currently out of DRC seeking medical treatment.

The court also fined Katumbi $6 million for selling the property through illegal means. According to the BBC, a Greek citizen has come forward claiming that the property belongs to his family.

Following the conviction, Katumbi, who is a former governor of the South-Eastern Katanga province, will as a result not be eligible to run for presidency in his country following the conviction – this is pursuant to the country’s constitution that prohibits convicts from political participation.

Katumbi’s bid for presidency has been backed by opposition parties, a direct threat to incumbent president Joseph Kabila’s reign.

Katumbi flew out of DRC on 20 May following the issuing of a warrant for his arrest on claims of hiring foregn mercenaries. His legal team will likely appeal the conviction.
