Former Chadian Dictator Hissene Habre Sentenced to Life in Prison For War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity, Torture And Rape

Former Chadian dictator Hissene Habre has been found guilty for atrocities committed during his eight-year rule and sentenced to life in prison.

A special tribunal in Senegal issued its verdict Monday, convicting Habre of war crimes, crimes against humanity, torture and a number of other charges. It said Habre also personally raped a female detainee four times.

Habre has two weeks to appeal the decision from the Extraordinary African Chambers. Victims of Habre’s rule have fought for a quarter-century to bring him to justice. He fled to Senegal and has lived there in exile since being overthrown in a coup in 1990.
