Botswana kills over 300 stray cattle

More than 300 cattle have been shot so far in Botswana after the neighbouring country effected a shot to kill policy on stray livestock last year in a bid to curb foot and mouth.
This was revealed by the Officer Commanding police in Matabeleland South Province, Senior Assistant Commissioner Learn Ncube when he appeared before a parliamentary portfolio committee on defence, home affairs and security in Gwanda.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Ncube said the neighbouring country ‘s policy has dealt a major blow to local communities as stolen livestock which are regarded as exhibits have also not been spared by the shoot to kill order.
377 cattle have been shot since the policy came into effect mid last year added Senior Assistant Commissioner Ncube.
The chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee on defence, home affairs and security, Mr Ronald Muderezwa said erecting a fence along the boundary between the two countries in a phased approach could be the long term solution to the problem.
The resolution to shoot stray cattle by the neighbouring country was made during the Zimbabwe-Botswana 30th session of the Joint Permanent Commission of defence and security meeting held in Victoria Falls last year.
The worst affected communities are in Nswazi and Mahefa areas in Plumtree.
Meanwhile police in Matabeleland South have managed to reduce crime by two percent between January 1st to 31st May 2017 compared to the same period last year.
